Early
Immigrant's Chest.
A customer
brought us this Immigrant's chest to sell for them. It had been
in their family for quite a long time but they now felt it was
time to let it go. The chest was probably made in the late 18th
or early 19th Century. It is made mainly from quarter sawn oak
and is decorated with wrought iron. It is of European origin,
most likely Germany or Scandanavia.
At an early
date it was grain painted and then later, perhaps around the turn
of the century, the wrought iron was removed, velvet was added,
and the iron put back on. At this time there are still remnants
of the velvet but it is mostly gone. At some point along the way
large ball feet were added and a missing drawer was replaced.
The lock mechanism has come loose but is still there. Overall,
the chest in in very good condition with the only real problems
being cosmetic.
This is a
wonderful opportunity to acquire a very early European chest in
good condition. There are not many around that are this nice.
