| Museum quality bed trunk.
This is a very rare and possibly unique trunk that folds out to become a bed. It is in very close to original condition with the exception of a couple of leather straps. It has the original linen liner inside, the original leather covering, as well as all of the hardware including a working lock and key.
When it is closed it measures a mere 30 inches but when opened it measures a full six feet, long enough for an Army Officer to lie down on.
This incredible trunk was featured in our book, Antique Trunks, and we are very fortunate to be able to offer it for sale. Trunks like this are once in a lifetime.
It was made in St. Louis by Summer Co. We don't know much about them but they obviously made very high quality trunks. This was probably one of several made for Army officers during the Civil War. The inner compartments would open up and carry a mattress as well as pillow, blankets, and other bedding.
It would make a great coffee table and you could use it as a guest bed in a pinch. Or you could donate it directly to your favorite museum.
