| Roll Top Steamer Trunk.
How about this one? We have never seen or heard of a trunk like this before. It is a canvas covered steamer trunk made in the late 19th Century. That's where the similarities to the standard steamer trunk end. This trunk actually has a top that rolls back much like a roll top desk. The top is divided into several parts and has multiple hinges and locks to make the whole thing work. It looks like it may have been a one-of-a-kind prototype. Unfortunately, we can't find any identification marks on the hardware so we don't know who made this remarkable example.
The two locks on the sides seem to be working but need a little adjustment. What looks like a lock in the front is actually a faux lock. The reason for it? I don't really know but it may have been put on to make the trunk look more "normal". Notice the bulbous cast iron corners. They stick out farther than any we have ever seen.
This trunk is missing the handles and the interior will need finishing if you plan on using it. But for a collector, this would be one of the best trunks you could find.
