About The Trunk Shop
We first became interested in trunks around 1975 or so. David and Pat went to see friend Norman "Smitty" Smith in Union, Maine. Smitty was an antique dealer, auctioneer, house painter, and misc. He was always messing around with antiques and he had a cut down round oak table. He cut the pedestal down to make it into a coffee table. Of course, many would think that sort of sacrilegious but Smitty was an experimenter. He also had a Civil War era trunk that he had refinished and we looked at that trunk and we looked at each other and knew then and there that was the way to go with trunks. The deteriorated leather covering had been removed. The steel straps were painted black. And the wood was a beautiful, mellow pine color. Today The Trunk Shop is located at 62 Canaan Back Road, Barrington NH and in Cyberspace. David's sister, Linda Edelstein and brother-in-law, Pat Morse, have been the owners for the past 10 years. The shop also carries a splendid array of antique lamps and mirrors. Hand wrought iron, small and unusual antiques, and a variety of 19th and 20th century artwork are some of the additional items we carry. The Trunk Shop is featured in the July 1997 issue of "Country Folk Art" in an article entitled "Traveling Heavy."
