Dome Top Civil War Era Trunk .

We picked up this excellent paper covered trunk in Pennsylvania a couple of years ago. The gent we bought it from had been collecting trunks for over 35 years and had a Grange Hall stuffed with them. He lost his long term lease and had to dispose of all 700 of his trunks. We were invited in to take the pick of the bunch and this is one of the two dozen trunks we chose.
It has the original fitted tray and the original brass lock with leaf keyhole cover. Notice there is a very slight dome top which is quite unusual. The copper buttons add a nice counterpoint to the paper covering that was printed to look like embossed leather. Many trunks made during this time had printed paper coverings because of the shortage of leather which was being used by the military.
This trunk is missing a few minor pieces like the handles and leather straps on the front. However, the paper is in great shape and this is a wonderful opportunity for a collector to step right into a trunk that basically only needs cleaning.
