Early Dresser Trunk.
All of the dresser trunks we have seen were made much later than this one. They were usually made 1880-95 or so. This example was made during the time of the Civil War. It is in pretty close to original condition retaining most of the embossed leather covering. It is missing some of the leather straps. It has two hand dovetailed walnut drawers as well as divided drop down compartment, a compartment in the bottom, plus two pockets on the top.
Every collector looks for something unusual or unique and this trunk would fit into both catagories. It is in sound condition, physically. It mainly needs cosmetic work to make it a pristine example. The solid brass working lock also adds a nice dimension to this great piece.
It is a good size for a coffee table and has a very strong presence. The drop down compartment is signed "The Upright" and dated 1867.
